GMO Seed, Treated Seed, and Organic Seed
Today’s Park Seed Blog Question of the Day! is pretty straightforward, but the Park Seed Horticulturist had a straightforward answer.
Park Seed Blog Question of the Day!
“Does the Park Seed Company sell any genetically modified seed?”
No, the Park Seed Company does not sell any GMO or treated seeds. Our seeds were not propagated from genetically engineered plants, nor were they chemically treated to be disease resistant or produce more. Treated seeds, by law, must be dyed so that they can be distinguishable to customers.
GMO: Genetically Modified Organism. This is any plant or animal that has been genetically engineered. It is not necessarily dangerous, but many people believe that more research needs to be done on the subject.
Treated Seeds: Seeds may be treated with certain chemicals to make it more likely to germinate, or resistant to fungi and other diseases. Many of these practices are considered a little controversial. Some people in the agricultural community, especially supporters of organic gardening, are pushing for these practices to be controlled if not mostly eliminated.
Organic: This is anything grown without the aid of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. This could apply to livestock as well if they are raised on organic feed and are not given synthetic supplements or hormones. Park Seed is a provider of professionally-grown Certified Organic seed certified by conditions mandated under the National Association for Organic Agriculture.
